The Top 3 Christmas Decorations? What are they?
What is Christmas without decorations? In fact, the Christmas decorations are reminders that Christmas has finally arrived! It doesn’t matter where you live, these things are the obvious signs of Christmas, the ivy, holly and mistletoe; these types of things remind us of flying reindeer, Christmas Sugar Plums and those little fat Elves wearing suits!
Even though Christmas takes place in the season of winter, the appearance of these Christmas decorations fill the season with light and hope.
But in case you are not familiar with these common Christmas decorations, this article will help you understand why these particular things are used and why.
1. Holly: Traditionally, holly was believed to have magical powers which could cure any illness caused by nature. Winter was considered a "bad" or "dark" season, and therefore, wreaths and garlands made of ivy and holly were normally left throughout the winter so as to protect oneself against bad luck, misfortune, or any kind of illness that strike humans during this season. The Germans used to believe that the holly had the power to combat against the ill forces of nature as well as the devilish demons.
2. What is the mystery of mistletoe? Mistletoe has been a symbol of romance and union for the lovers for many centuries. A Norse myth goes like this: Frigga was a Norse goddess, and she one day she gave her son Balder a mistletoe so that he was able to protect himself from any harmful effects caused by the natural elements.
Now since mistletoe grows on trees (it is a parasite plant which thrives on a well-nourished tree, only to kill it later), it had the power to harm Balder. Another god figured this out and used an arrow of mistletoe to bring Balder down. With Balder dead, her mother Frigga began to shed tears. Her tears transformed into the white berries that you see on mistletoe and her son was brought back to life!
Frigga vowed that she would kiss everybody who happened to wander under the mistletoe to take rest. This was how the mistletoe became a symbol for the lovers!
3. Cookies and candies: Nowadays we use cookies, candies and other junk foods to fill our stomachs. In good old days, it was not so. Back then, candies, cookies and sugary fruits were used to decorate the public rooms, kitchens and doorways of the houses. People sometimes used natural fruits and vegetables to decorate their houses, due to the fact that it was believed that those who decorate their houses with natural things would become wealthy as well as enjoy abundance!
